The Rubber Hand Illusion and Faulty Sensory Appreciation

If you haven’t experienced the rubber hand illusion you really should. Experiencing it first hand removes any doubt about the power of body maps and faulty sensory appreciation.  It is also the perfect group activity in terms of the “wow!” factor and is one of the most well known and well studied phenomena in neuroscience. In this workshop we will discuss body illusions and the relevance for Alexander technique. We will recreate the rubber hand illusion in groups of 3 using no more than a cardboard box (i.e. no rubber hand – we will use each other’s hands).  Our format allows you to adapt the activity to any group you might work with. We will also offer the chance for participants to share with each other their own experiences of faulty sensory appreciation in teaching and practice and the connections with the neuroscience of body maps.

Tim Cacciatore will assist Patrick remotely for this workshop.

Tim Cacciatore, Ph.D., M.STAT, became interested in the Alexander Technique while pursuing a PhD in neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego. He went on to a postdoc at Oregon Heath & Science University where he helped develop a method to measure postural muscle tone with Dr. Victor Gurfinkel and performed several research studies on the Alexander Technique. He later moved to London to train as an Alexander Technique teacher and continued his research with Dr. Brian Day at University College London. Tim has published studies on postural tone, movement control, and the Alexander Technique in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Cacciatore’s two decades of rigorous research and numerous peer-reviewed publications about the Alexander Technique makes him a leading expert on how the Alexander Technique works from a scientific perspective. He currently gives workshops and webinars with Dr. Patrick Johnson across the globe about the science of the Alexander Technique.

About Patrick Johnson

I trained at ATCA in Amsterdam with Paul Versteeg and Tessa Marwick, graduating in 2010. Since then I\\\’ve teaching Alexander Technique and running a Pilates studio at our space in Amsterdam with my wife. (www.smartbody.nl) I have also had a career as a physicist, working in labs in both the US and the Netherlands between 1995 and 2013. Currently I give online workshops in Alexander technique science with Tim Cacciatore, and run the website www.AlexanderTechniqueScience.com with Tim, Rajal Cohen, and Andrew McCann. I\\\’ve been dancing and teaching contact improvisation dance since 1995 and am also interested in other sports and movement practices – running, Pilates, and squash to name a few.
