Ease on Skis: using your head to change your mind about your courage

The Ease on Skis film follows four students as they apply the Alexander Technique to their skiing. We are submitting our full-length Ease on Skis documentary to the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. As Sundance requires all submissions to be premiered at their festival, we cannot show our film here at the Congress without disqualifying ourselves.
We will have to inhibit our eagerness to share it with you now. However, we would like to show you the trailer and let you in on what it was like for us, as almost complete amateurs, to make an Alexander ski movie. The whole process took us over six years, and we are very proud of the result.

About Erik Bendix and Phillip Nessel

Erik Bendix

I started skiing at age 10 while attending school at the Ecole d’Humanité in Switzerland. Skiing scared me stiff at the time. I managed to reach moderate skiing competence by my 20’s, but was stuck at a plateau of skill until I began studying the Alexander Technique. Then, suddenly, my skiing began opening up and has been opening since. Every day on the slopes now brings further improvement. I have been experimenting with applying Alexander Technique to skiing for over 25 years now. In 2004, I was encouraged to go public with this work by Steven Shaw (of The Art of Swimming), and began teaching and writing about it. Movement touches all aspects of my life. I am known as a teacher of world folk dance traditions, I practice Tai Chi, I swim and I have a private practice teaching Alexander Technique and Body-Mind Centering®. I also write and translate poetry, a movement form in words. Although I have now written a book on skiing, my experience of skiing goes far beyond words, often into bliss. I teach it because I want to share that.“

Phillip Nessel

I am a theatre artist, film maker and teacher of T’ai Chi Ch’uan and The Alexander Technique. I completed my AT training with Susan Sinclair in 2010. Since 2012 I’ve been involved in two projects that were concerned with the reform of the explanatory language of the AT. The Embodied Mind Project brought together AT teachers and cognitive scientists from around the world in two extended seminar/work exchange meetings 2012 and 2014. Since 2015 I have been working with Erik Bendix on a film about his “Ease on Skis” training method which is an AT based, but jargon-free, approach to alpine skiing.
