Good Use of Hunter and Gatherer People and Spiritual Direction

  1. “Living in the Present” 12 min. of my expedition to the Bushmen of the Kalahari in Namibia. This film shows a small band of !Kung Bushmen, going out hunting with bows and arrows. You see women and girls playing and dancing to complicated rhythms, chanting age old polyphonic songs. For us as AT teachers it is fascinating to see their balanced and coordinated way of moving, that due to our life-style, we now need to relearn. Even the aged headman displays these coordinated movements when he comes out of a squat and picks up his quivers or when he demonstrates crawling while stalking prey.
  2. Scenes from “Ichi daiji no innen nai” The Great Matter of sitting in Zazen (DVD 53 minutes,in English/German). After an invitation from my longtime Zen Master Harada Roshi, I visited his Monastery. A classical Japanese Soto Zen monastery that trained young monks. Quite exceptionally I was allowed to film everything. Like a fly on the wall we acompany the monks on their begging tours, attend the eating ceremony and other ceremonies dating back to the time of Buddha. Three senior monks speak about the “True Self”, about enlightenment and about how to deal with aggression and violence.
